Wednesday, 15. June 2011

  • Hamburg TLD GmbH chooses nic.at as registry administrator for .hamburg
  • Implementation of new .hamburg top level domain sets new milestone

Hamburg Top-Level-Domain GmbH has selected Austrian registry nic.at as technical partner for the new .hamburg domain from a long list of potential suitors. The key factors behind the decision were nic.at’s technical expertise and its long-standing experience and proven track record as the official registry for .at.

Salzburg, 15 June 2011. New top level domain .hamburg will be operated using registry technology supplied by nic.at, according to a joint statement issued today by nic.at CEO Richard Wein and Hamburg Top-Level-Domain GmbH CEO Oliver Süme. Mr Süme explains the decision: “For us it was important to know that we would be working with an experienced and highly professional registry when it came to applying for and implementing the .hamburg top level domain. nic.at matches this requirement to the letter. Richard Wein adds: “We are delighted to be have secured a city domain in the form of the dotHamburg initiative. nic.at will be there to help the people of Hamburg every step of the way as they create their own unique online identity.”

Positive signal to potential investors

Oliver Süme is convinced that the partnership between nic.at and Hamburg Top-Level-Domain GmbH will strike a chord with potential investors: “The knowledge that the technical side of things is in safe hands is an important criteria for potential investors looking to invest in .hamburg. The presence of nic.at ensures that the very best registry technology is at our disposal – providing long term stability and safeguarding the future of the .hamburg top level domain.” This is also relevant for the city of Hamburg, which has to approve the application and places great emphasis on identifying a highly reliable technology partner with a proven track record.

nic.at flying high with new top level domains

After the Kingdom of Bahrain (.bh), Hamburg Top-Level-Domain GmbH becomes the first ever German city TLD to benefit nic.at’s expertise and registry technology. And there is more to come, as Richard Wein explains: “We offer a combination of international experience gathered from consultancy projects in a range of different countries, and our modular registry-in-a-box software and service package offers the right custom technical solution for every individual top level domain.” More than one hundred man years of research and development have gone into creating this technology which will soon be in use at .hamburg in addition to .at and .bh. According to the latest information the window at ICANN for new top level domains applications such as .hamburg is expected to open in autumn 2011.
