- A new chapter in an ongoing success story: nic.at joins forces with new industry top level domains (TLDs)
- List of prospective TLD partners keeps on growing
Austria’s domain registry nic.at continues to turn heads on the international stage: after city initiatives .berlin and .hamburg, new industry TLDs .versicherung and .reise have selected nic.at as their technical partner.
Salzburg, 27 June 2011. With the ink still drying on the schedule for the new top level domains announced by internet registry authority ICANN, Austrian domain registry nic.at has hit the headlines with yet another success story.
Two more TLD applicants have commissioned nic.at to operate their technical infrastructure, as nic.at CEO Richard Wein explains: “We are delighted that nic.at’s wave of successes keeps on rolling with the contract awards for .versicherung and .reise. This is yet another demonstration that our expertise is valued and well-known among prospective applicants. Alexander Schwiersch, CEO of dotversicherung und dotreise GmbH adds: “In our industry trust, expertise and professionalism are particularly important - and all three are criteria and attributes that nic.at matches.”
Community top level domains for special customer groups
.versicherung and .reise are known as community top level domains as they are reserved for specific user groups. Mr Schwiersch explains: “We are creating an exclusive nomenclature for the insurance and travel industries, enabling companies to present an unambiguous face to their customers. As these are among the most frequently searched terms on the internet, the relevant domains will be optimised in the search rankings.” Another advantage for users is that the provider is checked for industry affiliation, and their status is clear to see in the domain suffix. “We want to use the new domain to cut out dubious offers from non-approved providers,” Schwiersch notes.
nic.at fields glut of inquiries
The announcements that followed ICANN’s publication of the new TLD schedule triggered a wave of new inquiries at nic.at. Richard Wein explains: “In the first two days after the announcement was made more than 10 candidates who were looking for a technical partner to support their top level domain application got in touch with us. Some of them were companies that wanted to register their company names. The majority of them are fully aware of what the process involves and understand that it is in fact a highly costly move.” But candidates must act now as the application deadline is at the end of the year, and only limited resources are available in the TLD industry.
