Yesterday, on 10 January 2011, Austria became a domain millionaire: at 4:28 pm the domain welpenparadies.at was registered with the Austrian registry nic.at by dog breeder Georg Bauchinger (Upper Austria). In the meantime, January is about to become the record month of new registrations.
“Welcome to the club of domain millionaires” has become the slogan for Austria since yesterday afternoon. Richard Wein, the CEO of nic.at, is enthusiastic about the jubilee domain: “We are excited about the one millionth .at-domain – it is the best proof for the success and constant growth of the .at-zone”.
And the one millionth domain goes to…. Upper Austria!
The domain holder, Georg Bauchinger, comes from Neuhofen im Innkreis, where he runs a Golden Retriever dog breeding business. This confirms the general trend regarding the origin of the domain holders, as Richard Wein states: “The .at-domain is still the virtual home of the Austrians, as almost 70% of the domain holders live here. It remains the most popular calling card on the web – for both companies and private persons.” And obviously for animals, too, as Georg Bauchinger’s dog breeding business will get its own web place at www.welpenparadies.at. Why has he chosen this name? “We have had the e-mail address welpenparadies@gmx.at for quite a long time now, so registering this domain for our website seemed obvious to us, as we could show everyone online that our puppies grow up like in paradise”, the breeder says.
Upward trend of the .at-domain continues
For more than ten years the .at-zone has been experiencing a continuous annual growth of 10 to 14 percent. And the new year has started with impressive numbers: “More than 7,000 domains have already been registered in the first week of January”, says the CEO of nic.at and looks into the future of .at: “We are eager to follow the development and look forward to the next .at-million!”
