- .bh rebooted – with software made by nic.at
- Austrian domain experts on course for international success
From fall 2011 the Bahrain domain name extension .bh will be operated using the same technology that powers the Austrian domain registry. nic.at and SBR Juconomy Consulting AG prevailed in the international bidding process despite stiff competition from all over the world.
Austrian expertise for the Kingdom of Bahrain – a partnership that now extends to the world wide web. The Austrian domain registration authority nic.at has been commissioned as the technical service provider for a state-of-the-art domain management system for the .bh zone. “The decision by the Bahraini telecoms regulator reflects the demand for nic.at’s expertise on the international stage and proves that we are seen as a serious player in the market,” says nic.at joint CEO Robert Schischka. “The collaboration with SBR Juconomy Consulting brings a partner on board with extensive experience of Arab markets.”
Target: from 4,000 to 100,000 domains in three years
Until now the .bh top level domain was only available to Bahraini nationals and allocations were subject to strict controls – which explains why there are currently only around 4,000 .bh domains. As part of the market liberalisation process, the Bahraini regulatory authority TRA aims to introduce new domain name allocation guidelines that conform to international standards. Together with nic.at’s registration and administration technology, these new guidelines are expected to raise the number of .bh domain names to 100,000 over the next three years.
“We are delighted to appoint nic.at and SBR Juconomy to deliver a robust domain registry solution following an extensive tendering process,” said TRA Bahrain’s ICT Director, Ahmed Aldoseri. “We have full confidence in nic.at and SBR as our strategic and technical partners for the .bh domain space, and believe such partners can achieve the objectives set by TRA Bahrain.”
nic.at and SBR: a strong partnership for Bahrain
The winning bid for the .bh domain came from nic.at subsidiary IPCom in a joint tender submitted with SBR Juconomy Consulting AG, a consultancy expert with an outstanding track record in the Middle East. SBR is responsible for project management and marketing, while the technical implementation comes under nic.at’s remit. nic.at also has a wealth of international experience, as joint CEO Robert Schischka explains: “Our specialists have contributed to all the major technology committees and are constantly being approached by other countries for consultancy work.” The Bahrain project is the latest in a string of international ventures, and similar projects have been implemented in Ireland, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Norway and Saudi Arabia.
.at success story extended to new top level domains
Over one hundred man-years of research and development have gone into the software technology already in place in the .at zone, and now it is on its way to Bahrain. nic.at wants to establish itself as a leading provider for the new top level domains which are due to come onto the market in 2012. Robert Schischka outlines the strategy: “This reference project will raise our profile among prospective buyers of the new top level domains. We have the ideal technical solution for every top level domain: registry-in-a-box – our all-in-one software and service package.”
