Austrian domain registry expertise for German capital: dotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG picks nic.at as technical partner for top level domain .berlin.
Salzburg, 20 June 2011. Austrian domain registry nic.at has notched up another major international success with its selection to support the introduction of yet another new top level domain. After taking a close look at a number of suitors, dotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG has announced its decision to commission nic.at to supply the technical infrastructure for .berlin. Richard Wein, CEO of nic.at, said: “We are proud to have won over dotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG – our highest-profile city TLD initiative so far – and can’t wait to start contributing our expertise to this international flagship project.”
Trusted Austrian registry is held in high regard internationally
Dirk Krischenowski, CEO of dotBERLIN GmbH & Co. KG, put several bidders under the microscope, evaluating their suitability according to technical, organisational and financial criteria as well as the requirements laid out in the ICANN Applicants Handbook. Explaining the reasons for the decision in favour of nic.at, he said: “nic.at is trusted and held in extremely high regard throughout the industry. The Austrian registry has extensive experience in the secure and glitch-free operation of more than one million .at domains. We are certain the nic.at is the right partner to support the .berlin’s ICANN application procedure.
New top level domains to come online in 2013
The long awaited and much discussed timeline for the introduction of new top level domains was finalised earlier today at the ICANN Meeting in Singapore. Under the schedule new applications will be accepted from 12 January 2012 onwards, and according to current information domain registrations will be possible from the start of 2013.
German towns and regions light years ahead of Austria
Richard Wein is disappointed that the latest developments appear to be passing Austria by. Not a single Austrian town or region has so far expressed any interest in applying for its own top level domain, although time is running out. “If you miss out this time, there is every chance that it will be years before the next application window opens – if at all,” Wein cautions.
