nic.at formalizes relationship with ICANN!
Thursday, 26. March 2009
In the so-called “Exchange of Letters” program, nic.at and ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) have defined their respective fields of responsibility, thus creating a formal basis for their cooperation.
In these documents ICANN explicitly approves nic.at’s responsibility for the TLD .at and guarantees a smooth operation of the root nameservers as well as a fast transaction of requested changes in the .at-nameservers. This so-called IANA function is vital for the general operation of the Internet.
In turn, nic.at commits itself to the continued management and operation of the .at domain administration in accordance with the approved international guidelines for the good of the entire Internet community. Likewise, nic.at will adequately contribute to the financing of ICANN.
“We are very glad that our good relationship with ICANN has now also been formally affirmed”, says Richard Wein, CEO of nic.at. “Despite all the criticism against ICANN we are supporting the principles of self-regulation and the well-proven bottom-up process” he says further. “I believe that it will become much easier for ICANN by choosing nic.at as a so-called “Back-end Registry” for new TLDs”. Dr. Paul Twomey, CEO of ICANN congratulated nic.at on this step and is looking forward to a good cooperation in the future.
