.at-domains at the top: 500,000 registered domains

Good marks in comparison with Europe – the strong .at-zone is supposed to gain additional 150,000 domains in 2006

The .at-zone has reached the half-million mark – domain no. 500,000 has been registered recently!

Compared to European standards, Austria is on a fair average regarding the domain numbers per inhabitant – even ahead of Finland, Italy or France. The .at-domain also shows good results and wins place 8 in a comparison of the absolute domain numbers, irrespective of the population figure!

The domain growth shows no signs of a slow-down at the moment – whereas there were only 30,000 domains at the end of 1998 and 160,000 domains at the end of 2000, the 500,000 domain level has just been crossed. However, the target is still much higher: Until the end of 2006 the domain number is expected to increase by another 150,000 domains.

“The strong growth of the .at-zone is due to an increased awareness of the Austrian Internet users regarding the possibilities of a domain – like the own identity on the web, a personal e-mail address, and the protection of product and brand names”, says nic.at CEO Richard Wein.
