fold faq

Where can I find the current Whois-data?

You can view your domain data by using the domain query on the nic.at homepage. This is the most up-to-date and reliable source for .at-domains. Due to data protection, no information about the invoice recipient and the domain's key date are available.

fold faq

Does the previous ISP have to approve a change of the ISP?

No - nic.at only needs the confirmation of the domain holder ( via fax document) as well as a valid online application in order to change the ISP/registrar. Please note that contracts between the domain holder and the previous ISP must be cancelled or modified separately.

fold faq

How do I make a data modification?

The relevant data must be sent to nic.at electronically - via online application (usually by the ISP). In addition, most data modifications require a written confirmation from the domain holder. As soon as both are available, the modification will be processed. If your ISP is also a nic.at registrar, there is usually no need to send a written confirmation.
If you just wish to modify the infoice recipient, a fax confirmation is sufficient. You can download the proper document here. If you want to modify a NICAT-handle, please complete the corresponding online form. Please note that this modification of a handle is only possible if the handle is neither administrated by a registrar nor used as a handle of a domain holder.

fold faq

How am I informed about errors in a domain application?

The result of the technical application check is automatically sent to the applicant via e-mail. The error description shows what needs to be corrected. A list of all error messages can be found here. In case of nameserver errors we advise you to contact your ISP or registrar.

fold faq

Why do I have to inform nic.at about modified data?

Just like you inform your bank about modified data, you should also inform nic.at, as the domain holder must be reachable in some cases: if there are legal problems, if the domain fee is not paid, etc. Unless we have your current data, we will not be able to inform you.
In the worst case you could even lose your domain. Please find further information in our General Terms and Conditions.

fold faq

What kinds of data modifications are there?

nic.at distinguishes between change of the holder, modification of holder data, change of the ISP or nameservers, modification of the billing address, data modifications of person objects and adding new contacts to a domain.
As the domain holder you can modify this data at any time, either separately or at once. You must send both a written confirmation and an electronic order to nic.at - via online application or via your ISP. nic.at registrars do not have to forward the domain holder's written confirmation for all transaction types.

fold faq

Are there any costs for data modifications?

No. nic.at modifies your data for free, as this is a part of our customer service.

fold faq

How does nic.at process data modifications?

Electronic applications for a data change undergo a technical check first, which ensures that all the information required has been specified and is both legible and plausible. Afterwards, a visual check is performed by our team in to check whether the modification is in compliance with the domain holder's will and whether the written confirmation corresponds with the electronic data. If everything is correct, the modification will be performed. In case of errors the applicant will be informed by e-mail.

fold faq

How long does a data modification take?

As soon as we have received all the necessary documents – i.e. both the online application and the written confirmation – the modification is usually completed at the same day. Delays may occur if applications are erroneous or incomplete. Missing documents must be submitted within four weeks, otherwise the data modification has to be requested again.
Data modifications that are sent by a nic.at registrar are usually completed within a few hours.

fold faq

How do I know if a data modification has been completed?

The sender of the online application is informed whether and when the modification has been completed. If you didn't send the data yourself, you can use the Whois-query on our website in order to check if the modification has taken place. In urgent cases our service team ( servicenic.at Mailto Link) will gladly inform you.

fold faq

Can I modify data without the aid of my ISP?

This is basically possible. The web application or the domain search provide all necessary data. However, as your ISP has the required technical information (e.g. nameserver data), we advise you having your data modified by your ISP - also because he should be informed about your current data, too.

fold faq

What is a change of the holder and how can it be performed?

A change of the domain holder is the transfer of a domain to another natural or legal person. In case of an organisation, modifications of the legal form or company name are also regarded as a change of the holder. Both the old and the new domain holder must confirm this transfer in writing. The required document can be found here. In addition, the data must be submitted to nic.at via online application (usually by the ISP).

fold faq

My company name changes - what do I have to do?

Changes of the company name or legal form are classified as a change of the domain holder, as the authorised signatories usually change, too. Therefore, please use the confirmation form " change of holder". If you are only the invoice recipient of a domain, please send your new data to rechnungnic.at Mailto Link.

fold faq

How does the invoice recipient inform nic.at about a change of his data?

If the invoice recipient himself does not change but only his data, it is sufficient to send an e-mail to rechnung@nic.at including the following information: nic.at customer number, company, department, contact person, address, phone number and e-mail address. If the invoice recipient is also the domain holder, he also has to change his domain data via data modification.

fold faq

What is important for a change of the ISP?

As soon as your domain is transfered to a new ISP/registrar, it should be deleted from the nameservers of the old ISP in order to prevent access to contents that are no longer up-to-date. Please inform your old ISP as soon as the transfer has been completed and note that there might still be existing contracts with your previous ISP.

fold faq

I am taking over a domain - what do I have to take into account?

As the new holder, you take over all rights and liabilities regarding the domain. If there are any open invoices you have to pay for them. Please make sure that all your data is specified correctly and sign the transfer document personally or for the company. Contact your ISP/registrar for further details.

fold faq

How can I create a NICAT-handle?

You can generate NICAT-handles by using the proper online-form on our website, which can be found here.  Handles can also be created directly during the domain registration or modification process.

fold faq

What is a NICAT-handle and what is it used for?

A handle is a number code which refers to a specific person and his data. Instead of entering the person and data for each entry, it is sufficient to enter the corresponding number/handle. Handles are basically used for the specification of a domain's contact persons (admin-c, tech-c, zone-c).
A NICAT-handle consists of two to four letters, followed by numbers and –NICAT. The initial letters are usually the initials of the person.

fold faq

How can I modify a NICAT-handle?

You can modify handles by using the appropriate online-form on our website. You can find it here. However, if the handle is also used as the holder of any domain, a modification is not possible at the moment. Please modify the domain data via  online application in this case.

fold faq

What is a bulk domain transfer?

At least 25 domains are transferred from the same old holder to the same new domain holder. In this case, the we need the written confirmation for the transfer as well as the standard e-mail including sample data. This is the only type of bulk modification that requires the signature of the domain holders. nic.at registrars can also make this transfer by changing the handle.

fold faq

How can I modify the data of several domains at once?

Please make a bulk modification for more than 25 domains.
Note: The original data of the domains must be the same and the new data as well.

fold faq

What is an internal nameserver change?

This is not equal to a change of the ISP! As this is often pretended, nic.at checks whether an internal change of nameservers is truly the case or whether there has actually been a change of the ISP. If you have leased a nameserver, please inform nic.at in due time.

fold faq

How can I change data for less than 25 domains?

Such modifications must be performed conventionally (i.e. online application and the customer's fax confirmation).

fold faq

What must I do in case of error messages in bulk modifications?

If the modification of single domains is not successful (e.g. because of incorrect data or nameserver entries), these domains are excluded from the bulk modification. In this case, an online application via the nic.at website mus be sent within four weeks. Unless these online applications are sent within this period, the written confirmation of the bulk modification will become invalid, and it will then be necessary to fax the usual written confirmations signed by the domain holders.

fold faq

Which data must be specified for bulk modifications?

In order to process your request as fast as possible, we ask you to send the following details via e-mail to massennic.at Mailto Link:
1. company and address,
2. domain list,
3. sample template and written confiirmation.

1. Company + address:

Company, address, contact person, phone number and e-mail address to which the status information, Done-reports and Notdone-reports regarding the domain should be sent. (If you do not specify an e-mail address, you will not receive any information about the bulk modification!)

2. Domain list:

Please insert the domains (text only) without www. and without any numeration here.

3. Sample template:

Please insert only such data in the templates that should actually be changed. If e.g. the nameservers should be changed, insert the current nameservers as the previous data and the new nameservers as the new data. Please specify the name of the sample domain from your bulk modification in the field "domain" which exactly matches the current entries. The template must be filled out only once.

4. Written confirmation:

Please send the filled out and duly signed form via fax to +43/662/46 69-29. The nic.at registrar team will process your data modification as soon as all documents have been submitted.

fold faq

In which domains is my NICAT-handle specified?

Due to data protection, nic.at must not allow queries on domains linked with a certain handle.

fold faq

Where can I find data (e.g. address) of my handle?

You can find data of handles and contact persons on the nic.at homepage (category: search).
