IPS statistics - Internet Profile Service
To extend our quantitative perspective on the .at zone with a qualitative aspect we decided to analyze the .at zone on the content layer to retrieve more specific information. Questions asked include: How many domains are functional? How many domains are non functional due to several technical reasons? How many domains are redirected and where do they redirect to?
For this analysis we decided to rely on a tool called "IPS - Internet Profile Service" powered by VeriSign Inc ®. VeriSign uses this tool to analyze the zones for which they are the registry operator (.com and .net) and produces a wide variety of interesting results. VeriSign designed the tool for .at and the German speaking language area and designed the results to fit our needs.
Frequency of analysis
The analysis is based on a domainlist snapshot of the .at zone at the beginning of each (from October '07 on every second) month. After VeriSign has run the analysis nic.at publishes the results online on the 15th of the corresponding month.
Procedure of analysis
The analysis is based on a very special procedure developed by VeriSign ®. This procedure allowed us to run a qualitative analysis of whole zones (or list of domains). At the beginning of each month nic.at submits a complete list of all .at, .co.at and .or.at domains.
In a mulit-level process the first step is to resolve the nameservers. On success the second step is to download up to 5 pages from the website and collect data for futher analysis. Based on the gathered data sophisticated algorithms generate the hereby presented results.
