Grants from the Internet Foundation Austria (IPA)

The Internet Foundation Austria (IPA) is an Austrian non-profit foundation for the following purposes:

• promoting the internet in Austria and the free and orderly access to its networks and services, with due consideration of international regulations
• taking over the responsibility of the internet domain administration in Austria
• ensuring its continued existence in economic terms
• supporting its beneficiaries

Thus, the Internet Foundation Austria (IPA) supports projects and activities which contribute to the expansion, further propagation and versatile use of the internet in Austria. This support particularly focuses on creating and ensuring new means of access.

The organisation supports projects and activities from physical persons and legal entities that demonstrate outstanding accomplishments in the development of the internet in Austria according to the purpose of the foundation. Since 2006, under the name "netidee.at", the Internet Foundation Austria (IPA) issues calls for projects, which will be evaluated by an independent advisory group, before beeing supported. The following projects and activities have been supported by the IPA up to now:

• Development and operation of the priv.at sub-domain, which enables private individuals to acquire free domain names (Christian Mock, 2001)
• Promotion of the study "ICANN, OECD and WTO within the Developing International Legal Regulation of the Internet" at the Institute of International Law and International Relations at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz (conducted by Mag. Dr. Martin Stotter und Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Wolfgang Benedek, 2001)
• Development and support of an SIP express router at the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin / GMD (Jiri Kuthan, 2003)
• Promotion of the development of EAP SIM radius support by Sandelman Software Works (Michael Richardson, 2003)
• Promotion of the development of EAP SIM client supports (www.open1x.org) by the University of Utah (Chris Hessing, 2003)
• Support of a Voice over IP project at the Rennweg technical secondary school in Vienna (Martin Weissenböck, 2003)

Annual grants from the Internet Foundation Austria (IPA) received by:

• the University of Vienna, which also ensures the continued development and operation of the technical domain administration (nameservers, transaction administration, etc.)
• the ISPA (Internet Service Providers Austria), which serves as a platform for Austrian ISPs and significantly contributes to the expansion and maintenance of the internet operation in Austria

The following projects have been developed and supported in close cooperation with the nic.at staff members:

• Development and organisation of at43, which is a free SIP-platform for students of the Vienna University providing Instant Messaging, Presence, e-mail, telephony and video services.
• Development and operation of the Enum trial
• Development and organisation of Greenspot – a roaming platform for WLAN providers and operators
• Development of a standardised registrar/registry interface based on the EPP protocol
