FAQ
Domain-Cancellation

Do I also have to cancel the services of my ISP?
-
Probably yes. This is not necessary if only the domain name is to be cancelled. If you want to cancel further services provided by your ISP/registrar, please contact this company.

I cancelled the domain in time but received an invoice.

What happens to open domain invoices if a domain is cancelled?
-
Open invoices must be paid in any case. Otherwise, nic.at will enforce the claim by legal action. If the domain was cancelled in time but nic.at has sent an invoice anyhow, the relevant invoice will be cancelled.

Where can I find a domain's service period?
-
The service period of a domain is indicated on the invoice documents. In addition, nic.at will gladly inform the domain holder or the invoice recipient about this data.

What happens when a domain is cancelled by the end of the current service period?
-
The domain can be used until the end of the paid service period. Afterwards, it will be automatically locked, rendering it technically inoperative. The domain’s internet services (website, e- mail) also become inoperative as well as the domain’s sub-domains. After this technical lock (presumably 8 weeks) the domain becomes available for a redelegation.

What happens if a domain is cancelled immediately?
-
nic.at will immediately lock the domain, thus rendering it technically inoperative. The domain’s internet services (website, e-mail) also become inoperative, as well as the domain’s sub-domains. After this technical lock (presumably 8 weeks) the domain becomes available for a redelegation.

When can a domain be cancelled?
-
A domain can be cancelled at any time. Please note that it is important to cancel at least four weeks before the beginning of the next service period. Otherwise the domain fee will be charged for another year and must be paid despite the cancellation.

Can the ISP cancel a domain instead of the customer?
-
No, only the domain holder himself may cancel the domain. nic.at registrars can initiate the cancellation on behalf of the customer.

Who can cancel a domain?
-
The domain can be cancelled only by the domain holder – in writing and signed by the proper person or company. The holder thereby abandons all rights and liabilities regarding the domain. Subsequently, the domain can be registered anew.
Domains that are administered by a nic.at-registrar can also be cancelled directly with the registrar. Please contact your ISP in this case.
